Reflective Essay
I chose to keep the scope of my podcast pretty broad so that I could have a wider net to find content. I think that people are not aware of how much of their data is being recorded online and what that might mean for them as individuals and as members of society, especially in the future. Organizations also need to be aware of consumer opinion about data privacy and tracking online to avoid potential public relations crises and financial losses. Class action lawsuits regarding breaches of privacy online are becoming more common, and different levels of government have been weighing in on some of the issues by filing lawsuits and passing legislation.
In terms of technical choices, I recorded my podcast audio with Audacity, which is an open-source recording software that I have used in the past. The software has gone through some updates and lost its ability to mute parts of the track easily. It used to have a keyboard shortcut for that. I initially wanted to use RSS.com to publish my podcast, but changed my mind after doing all the uploading and filling in all the fields, only to be required to sign up for a monthly cost. I did not want to commit, so I took all my work over to Spotify, where it says it is always free. So I have embedded the links for each recording from my Spotify account into the post for each podcast. I think the embedding looks nice. I designed the podcast logo in Canva.com, because it is the easiest design tool to use that I have ever come across.
I hope that the content in these first three episodes is not too broad or superficial to be of assistance to my listeners. I expect that the content will be a good introduction to some of the key issues that affect us as individuals when it comes to data tracking online. If the series were to continue, I am sure that I would find more of a niche and specialize in a particular topic. This process would be very similar to how a reporter starts their beat, by learning about the topic until they master it, and then transforming into an expert for certain industries or topics.
